Cometary Knots and High Energy Photons and Neutrinos from Gamma Ray Bursts

چکیده
The Hubble Space Telescope has recently discovered thousands of gigantic comet-like objects in a ring around the central star in the nearest planetary nebula. We suggest that such circumstellar rings exist around most stars. Collisions of the relativistic debris from gamma ray bursts in dense stellar regions with such gigantic comet-like objects, which have been stripped off from the circumstellar rings by gravitational perturbations, produce detectable fluxes of high energy γ-rays and neutrinos. High-energy neutrinos from gamma ray bursts.
We treat high-energy neutrino production in gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Detailed calculations of photomeson neutrino production are presented for the collapsar model, where internal nonthermal synchrotron radiation is the primary target photon field, and the supranova model, where external pulsar-wind synchrotron radiation provides important additional target photons. Detection of greater, similar...
متن کاملNeutrinos from Gamma Ray Bursts
We show that the detection of neutrinos from a typical gamma ray burst requires a kilometer-scale detector. We argue that large bursts should be visible with the neutrino telescopes under construction. We emphasize the 3 techniques by which neutrino telescopes can perform this search: by triggering on i) bursts of muons from muon neutrinos, ii) muons from air cascades initiated by high energy g...
متن کاملUltra-high energy cosmic rays, cascade γ-rays, and high-energy neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are sources of energetic, highly variable fluxes of γ rays, which demonstrates that they are powerful particle accelerators. Besides relativistic electrons, GRBs should also accelerate high-energy hadrons, some of which could escape cooling to produce ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Acceleration of high-energy hadrons in GRB blast waves will be established if hig...
متن کاملA Model of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts: Heated Neutron Stars in Close Binary Systems
In this paper we present a model for the short (< 1 second) population of gamma-ray bursts. In this model heated neutron stars in a close binary system near its last stable orbit emit a large amount of neutrinos (∼ 10 ergs). A fraction of these neutrinos will annihilate to form an ee pair plasma wind which will, in turn, expand and recombine to photons which make the gamma-ray burst. We study n...
متن کاملNeutrinos From Individual Gamma-Ray Bursts in the BATSE Catalog
We estimate the neutrino emission from individual gamma-ray bursts observed by the BATSE detector on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. Neutrinos are produced by photoproduction of pions when protons interact with photons in the region where the kinetic energy of the relativistic fireball is dissipated allowing the acceleration of electrons and protons. We also consider models where neutrinos a...
